Anusara Description

What is Anusara? How is it different than other styles of yoga? What’s the class like? These are some of the many questions that you may be asking when you read about this new class.

Anusara is a Sanskrit word that means “stepping into the flow of Grace,” or “stepping into the Flow.” As you might surmise by this name, this is a yoga of aligning with Nature, of cultivating nourishing, nurturing, clear relationships with the world around us and the vast world within us. When we remember our connection to something bigger- whether we call it Nature, God, the Absolute, Universal Consciousness, Cosmic Intelligence, we remember that truly we are connected to a flow of energy and consciousness that we can choose to align with or misalign with.

Anusara takes the premise that we are all imbued with Spirit and carry the spark of the Divine within our hearts. Our yoga practice, therefore, is an opportunity to remember on an experiential level that quality within us. It’s a time to uncover the veils over our heart and eyes that have blocked the joyful remembrance of our innate goodness. Anusara assists this process by its foundational philosophy being based on the ancient Shiva-Shakti Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness and understanding that all of life is an embodiment of the Divine in a myriad of forms. In every Anusara class, there will be a heart theme that invites the student to remember that intention infuses the practice with great meaningfulness and transformation.

In addition to the philosophy, the methodology of Anusara is grounded in a set of Universal Principles of Alignment. These principles are based on scientifically-based biomechanics and anatomy. Each Anusara class will assist the student in finding optimal ways of moving and aligning their body for great pranic or energetic flow and for strengthing and supporting the body and its systems in a balanced way. Because of this, Anusara can serve many types of populations- from young people, seniors, those in wheelchairs, seasoned athletes, and everyone in between. Anusara can be a slower, mindful class as well as a strong athletic class. It is always therapeutic in practice, and can be taught as one-on-one healing session or a general class that is therapeutic in nature. The teacher teaches to the students and their needs to best support their flow into balance and optimal vitality.

I’ve been studying Anusara for over 10 years. It has been incredibly healing physically, spiritually, and emotionally. To me, Anusara is a coming home- to my heart, to myself, to love in every breath. I hope that your exploration into Anusara brings you a sense of your inner worth, your radiance, your light, and your deep interconnection to all beings and all things. I look forward to seeing you on the mat!

Anusara Theraputics Class – From the time we are born and begin walking we establish patterns of movement. Our “patterns” have a huge impact on our posture from our feet to the top of our head. It’s how we take form and how we get stuck. Misalignments cause restrictions in the body which can result in all sorts of issues from bunions to hip replacements. Exercise alone is not always enough to resolve structural or pain problems.

This class is an active class using the Principles of Anusara Alignment and simple yoga poses to rebalance the body. We are changing habitual patterns to clear injuries, maintain a healthy lifestyle and bring radiant balance and joy back into our lives. Engaging your muscles in a therapeutic way requires stamina but we ALWAYS offer modifications. The postures and exercises will include in every class- misalignments of the feet, hips, knees, shoulders, neck, low back, elbows, wrists. You will leave with a deeper understanding and knowledge of the body. Tennis balls, straps, blocks, blankets, chairs, marbles and rubber bands will be used to offer support as we strengthen, lengthen, open and weave our way back to freedom.

Who needs this class? Even if you have an ongoing practice but have one side that’s stuck, recovering from an injury, feel stiff all the time, problem feet, knee issues, hip pain, frozen shoulder, neck issues etc. Anusara Therapeutics offers support in the class and away from the studio. Many of these exercises can be practiced at home once the alignment is learned. PRACTICE – PERSISTENCE – PATIENCE will be our motto. Many of these issues did not happen overnight and will take time to release but it will happen. I’ve seen people walk away from a first session feeling relief!
