Proprioceptive Writing is a

contemplative writing practice that enables you to engage with your thoughts and feelings in a way that awakens the spacious, loving wisdom of your mind. In the same way that yoga leaves your body feeling refreshed and energized, PW enlivens your thinking, feeling and insightful mind. Using simple techniques and following a few basic instructions, Proprioceptive Writers cultivate a capacity for engaging with thought in an interested, non judgmental way. A inner benevolent listener is awakened. Through this process the power of authentic voice is uncovered. We become more available for true inquiry- perspectives broaden, insights are revealed and we enjoy a greater sense of aliveness.

Over time, Proprioceptive Writing helps to

  • dissolve inhibitions
  • develop self trust
  • resolve conflicts
  • reveal your authentic voice
  • liberate creative energies
  • heighten a sense of aliveness
  • empower your thinking and feeling self

In this afternoon introduction Kim will present the basic elements of Proprioceptive Writing. Participants apply these elements to a session of practice and receive instructional guidance from Kim on fine tuning their practice.

Paper is supplied for this program. Bring a pen or use one of ours. Completing this afternoon introduction fulfills the prerequisite requirement for participation in Sundays workshop as well as participation in weekly ongoing Proprioceptive Writing groups hosted at Innerlight.

Mind in Motion: Yoga and Proprioceptive Writing

February 11, Sunday, 9 am-5 pm
$70 early/$80 regular

Yoga and Proprioceptive Writing are highly synergistic practices. Moving and breathing in yoga frees the mind from anxiety. The mind becomes open, receptive and focused the optimal state for Proprioceptive Writing. When the mind works out in Proprioceptive Writing, energy is stimulated. Yoga practice is the perfect format for integrating and grounding the emotional and intellectual experiences of Proprioceptive Writing. In our writing practice we unburden ourselves from assumptions and open to states of wonder, investigation and inquiry that heighten awareness on the yoga mat. Moving between the yoga mat and the writing table, the body and the mind are restored to their natural states of vibrant aliveness and we reconnect to our true nature.

In this day long workshop Kim will lead sessions in moderate yoga and Proprioceptive Writing, highlight the enhancing aspects of both.

  • Eat lightly and dress for movement.
  • There will be a lunch break, about an hour and a half.

Kim Chandler was certified as a Kripalu Yoga teacher in March, 1990. In November 1991 in Portland, Maine, Kim began her practice of Proprioceptive Writing with Linda Trichter Metcalf and Tobin Simon, the founders of Proprioceptive Writing and Kim Chandler authors of the book Writing the Mind Alive: the Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice. Struck by the similarity of her experiences in PW and yoga, Kim began a personal inquiry of the relationship between her practices on the mat and on the page. A home practice of PW and yoga, exposure to Anusara yoga, continued study with Linda and Toby and her experiences assisting PW workshops all informed her inquiry. In 2005 Kim completed a certified two year teacher training course in Proprioceptive Writing. As adjunct faculty at Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA., she directs a program on contemplative practices which focuses on yoga and Proprioceptive Writing. Kim occasionally offers ongoing PW groups at her studio, Innerlight, where she teaches weekly yoga classes and directs a teacher training program.
